A trip to Dorking...

Lisa and i had a little drive out to Dorking yesterday to visit The Quilt Room, it's a fabulous little shop that is just crammed full of fabric, books and anything else you may need for your patchwork project.
Last time i went i bought the bag pattern and yesterday i succumbed to some fabric, i just love the design and it comes in a myriad of colours, i also bought a pack of 80/20 wadding to give my bag some strength ;o)

I'm hoping to get to work on it next week, the rest of this week will be spent making sure we have everything we need for our first weekend away camping in what seems like forever but is actually only 11 weeks... actually, given the frequency of past years, 11 weeks is a blumming long time for us!!
We had a trial run in the van last weekend when we camped outside a friend's house after their housewarming party but this will be our first trip out with the tinted windows, fitted curtains and new paint job :oD

I can't wait!!

WEEEEEEEEEEEE!

This afternoon i spent a rather enjoyable 5 minutes rolling around in a giant inflatable hamster ball!
You basically get strapped in and shoved down a steep slope to bounce and roll until you reach the bottom and the waiting car-cum-brake lol
The beautiful surroundings certainly make it a bit more special. It's held in a gorgeous part of Sussex called The Devil's Dyke which is a wonderful day out in itself.

It was a lot of fun but i definitely wouldn't pay £50 to do it again!
Luckily my friend was given a voucher at her work and this is what she decided to do with it, and i was lucky enough to be asked to join her :oD

Alien Landscape

It's actually tiny fungus growing on one of those bench seat table thingies that you get in pub gardens, i found it fascinating :oD
We'd gone for a lovely drive out the afternoon before we went to the fairground and ended up in a pub in the country next to a big park where we took the dog for a lovely walk :o)

A sunny afternoon in...

Kingston!

with some strange art...

a very pretty marketplace...

Some lovely churches (and Action Squirrel)...

and a very pretty shopping centre which had me fascinated for my entire trip through it.
I love that roof!!
However, my reason for going was a failure! They used to have a good sized fabric market but unfortunately it has now dwindled to one fabric stall which didn't have anything at all suitable for the van, luckily though i got chatting to the haberdashery man and he told me that there are four fabric stalls in Bromley market on Thursday which is a heck of a lot closer than Kingston. I am really proud of myself though, i made it there and back with no satnav, no maps, no directions, no nothing. I just followed the signs :oD

A very pleasant afternoon

was had by, well, me actually!
Hopefully Joy enjoyed it too, i'm sure she did as she told me she did and she isn't the type to lie ;o)

We met up at Waterloo station which was an adventure for me, not least because the train driver wasn't entirely convinced we were going to stop at Waterloo due to signal failure. He told us we were terminating at London BRidge, then two minutes later he said we were going all the way and then when we got to London Bridge he decided we were stopping there! Luckily it isn't very difficult to get to Waterloo so i located my platform and jumped on the train and off i went!
Our first stop was Boots and their tantalising array of sandwiches, after much deliberation and OOhing over the Green Lunchbag* which is made from recycled Coke bottles - and both Joy and i said in unison " that'll be perfect for sock knitting" :oD - we had our lunches so set off to find a sunny spot to sit and eat and have a catch up.
Our walk took us across the Hungerford Bridge where you get this lovely view down river...

and isn't it a pretty bridge

After a couple of hours of lunching, chatting and enjoying the lovely spring afternoon we headed back to Waterloo Station to visit Iknit London which we were both looking forward to with much anticipation :oD
I was actually very surprised how small the store was, but how full of gorgeousness it was, and the two ladies who were working in there were nothing but helpful and friendly and let us leave our bags while we perused. You'll be pleased to hear i was very, very restrained and only bought a ball of Patons cotton which i need for a dishcloth swap i'm taking part in annnnnnnnnd...something very exciting!!
I saw these on the net a while ago now and have been wondering about them ever since, so when i saw them in the shop i just had to try them. Luckily i am starting a new project soon which involves 4ply so i bought a 4mm circular needle, and i've tried it out and it's LOVELY! The edges of the square needle aren't sharp or too pointed, my finger and thumb just sit there and don't have to grip so hard, i think it's something to do with the "corners" acting in some scientific way, but as i'm no scientist i can't tell you. I just know it's comfy and i am feeling a bit more positive now and don't think i will have to sell off my stash after all :oD
Of course, in all the excitement i didn't take any pictures of Joy and i in the shop, or any of Joy and i at all in fact!!

I can highly recommend the Embankment Gardens by the way, if you need a sunny spot to rest a while, the flower beds will be in full bloom soon and full of daffs and tulips. I might even have to go back just to see it for myself as the beds are huge and crammed with tulip greenery :o)

* No affiliation at all, i just wanted to show you the bag 'cos it's so cute :oD

the knitted vase...

The Brighton Safari...

What a lovely day, calm and friendly and just lovely!

I drove my new car down there, which was fun! The Golf survived, as did i, and we pulled up outside the church hall amid rain showers, dark skies and coldness but inside the hall was a warm glow of wool, spinners, knitters and cake and tea!
I saw Jan, whose blog i had seen the flyer on in the first place and her lovely pile of sock yarns and lace weight yarns and then decided i needed a nice restoring cup of tea after my journey down so i headed off for tea and a cheese scone mmmmmmmmm!

Then it was on to the "shopping". I had a browse round and after some dithering at Jan's gorgeous piles of wool i picked out a lovely "wrapped" skein in shades of green, blue and brown, the wrap is an acrylic binder and so doesn't pick up the colour but it adds a depth to the yarn that i really love.

I also picked out a skein of something for someone, but it's secret so i can't tell you about that :oD
Jan was sharing her table with two young ladies, who were in turn looking after the stall for their Mum, Annie. Now, i saw vases, i thought i was a knitted covering for the vase inside, but on closer inspection it was a knitted vase which had been stiffened and i could not resist. There were several designs there but the one that caught my eye was a lovely shade of green in a wonderful pattern. I find it pleasing on so many levels, i love looking at it and admiring how the shape of the pattern complements the shape of the vase, the colour feels "right" for the pattern too and well, i love it! I managed to drag myself past the rovings, i'm not doing too well with spinning and i have a lot of fluff here already without adding to that stash any more than i have to!
I stood in awe at Nimu's stand. The colours were just beautiful and i made the mistake of picking one up... it stuck to my hand :oD

Yes, i have a lot of yarn, no, i probably won't knit it all before i die but this is angora for heaven's sake! I ummmmed and ahhhhed and then saw the perfect skein, all sugary pink and lilac and perfect for my mother-in-law!

So that was it, shopping over, money gone but a bursting shopping bag and some new to me yarn outlets :oD
There were lots of other things to buy too, sushi sock rolls, self-striping sock yarns, acid dyes, kool-aid and more sock blanks. Knitted monsters, badges, crochet brooches and hair decorations, sock bags, pottery yarn bowls, stitchmarkers... an endless array of talent really!

I went on to spend the afternoon crocheting pasties as part of the "Naughty Knitting and Kinky Crochet" workshop, but my pasties were a big FAIL as i decided to use KidSilkHaze (which is evil) as the upper part and the lining part of the pastie didn't show through very well. My pasties also came out extremely small, i think i crochet tighter than i knit! :oD
I have to say, i went there having only met Jan twice before in the past three years, but i felt really welcome and had a lovely afternoon just having a giggle with the workshop ladies. We were joined by various local ladies, one had her daughter with her and told her the pasties were "dolly hats" and they sat and crocheted hats for her PG Monkey and there were the two old dears who joined us to crochet garters and proudly proclaimed that they would wear them to church on Sunday! Suzanne and Sue who were running the workshop took great care of us all and were so encouraging, and i have discovered a love for the knitted undergarment! I'm not sure i could knit and wear cami-knickers but they look stunning! :oD

I really hope Peri is able to take on the challenge of organising another event next year, i love seeing the small indie dyers work in person as it were and not just on the computer screen. As a visitor and not a stall holder i found the event to be well organised and well thought out but i can only imagine how much stress and organisation was involved!
Oh, and i won on the raffle too! :oD
